Luckily I know someone who helped restore my computer to its original state, but that doesn't stop the spamming or the pop-ups and it doesn't protect me from future invasion.

coming from your computer. An example is the SoBig virus whos purpose
was to create a broad spamming infrastructure by planting code
on unwilling participants PCs creating a mass threat to email
security. In reality, this is a malicious third party
that steals your private information and can cause you MAJOR
identity and financial problems. It's time to get serious about spam blocker software - as a first
line of defense. Regulation isn't working, while it is getting
tougher and tougher to quickly decide what is spam and what is not
in your inbox and as we have seen, the stakes are getting higher.
Government has passed the CAN-SPAM Act, a law backed overwhelmingly by spammers and large corporations, because it legalized spamming instead of banning it. With the passage of CAN-SPAM, spamming has become legal throughout the United States. Organizations such as The Anti SPAM League give you the chance to report spamming companies and individuals and access valuable information on how to control the spam problem. While fraud per se is an issue separate from spam, unsolicited email often contains offers for illegal or fraudulent products. Although this is unlikely to affect the amount of spam you receive since it is not their fault that their system was attacked from outside, ISPs want to know about spam attacks, either to learn how to protect their system, or to set policy.
The economics of spamming makes Jaynes' decision to build a career of it understandable, though not noble. The fact that spamming can be such a profitable undertaking means that the profession is not likely to go anywhere in the near future. However, once you do the math even this miniscule response rate can make one very wealthy very quickly. Spammers work on the law of averages, which would seem like an odd strategy considering that the average response rate for a spam message is just one-tenth of one percent. Since each message costs only fractions of a penny to send, and Jaynes was sending literally billions of messages a year, it's easy to see how he pulled in $400,000 to $750,000 a month, while spending perhaps $50,000 on bandwidth and other overhead.
Remember, because sending email is so inexpensive, spamming can be profitable even if only a small percentage of people purchase what they're selling. Finally, Filter your incoming email using filtering software. Even if you guard your email address religiously, you'll likely still receive spam. Filtering software is usually inexpensive and effective, but there are some important features to consider with any filtering package. Don't support what you're trying to stop.
Often newsletters you sign up to get blocked because too many messages are sent out at the same time or some subscriber have complained accusing the sender of spamming. All this measures should protect you from spammers and their spying eyes. As an extra precaution you should also use spyware removal software. This will remove possible spyware from your computer. However, be careful! With this method in order to work you should adopt a strict email discipline and limit the number of people with access to your email addresses and not spread them around.

Make absolutely certain that both your anti-virus and firewall software have current detection signatures and have been completely patched and updated. Phatbot and Proxy-Guzu are two of the more common Trojans used for the purpose of turning your computer into a spam zombie.
This can cause huge problems if they're reported for spamming. Not only does it block a single IP address it also blocks the IP addresses next to it. When an IP address is added to a permanent blacklist any email server configured to block email from this list will never receive email from that range of IP addresses again. After a few hours the offending IP address is removed from the blacklist. Take a few moments from your day and ensure that your website or email address is not being blocked.
Unfortunately, the plague of spam isn't going to fade away any time soon, although authorities (at least in Australia) have started taking legal action and imposing hefty penalties for spamming. Imagine what would happen if we all did that? There would be so many dud addresses floating around that harvesting would be a waste of time. The spammers will pay to send them out and they'll bounce somewhere, hopefully right back to them. It will be stuffed full of email addresses, none of which work. When the spam harvesting software goes through my site, it won't find a single working email address in my site proper, but it will stumble on a goldmine of addresses and load them into it's database.

If they don't make any money as a result of their spamming, they eventually will get the message and stop. So what can we do about it? If I had a definitive answer to that question, I probably would get the Nobel Prize for Solving an Annoying World Problem. Do they have a Nobel Prize for solving an annoying world problem.
