But its exponential growth — reports suggest that about 90 percent of all e-mail is spam — has led e-mail users to build daunting ramparts to block unwanted messages and companies to circulate blacklists of alleged spammers. One cannot fault people for seeking ways to avoid unwanted or aggressive solicitations but the consequences of some anti-spam measures may not be what the people seeking protection from spam had in mind. Some efforts to block unwanted e-messages are threatening free speech on the Internet.

0 a software suite that offers user-to-device authentication antivirus (malware) protection firewalling spam protection for SMS messages and intrusion detection. The Advanced package which we tested adds smartphone encryption to the list of controls for protecting local data and files. Our tests showed TMMS can do a lot to help secure smartphones but there are some caveats. I have the Internet Security option in Internet Explorer set to medium risk. I’ve been warned by IE that unclicking a box will open my computer to “risk” but it doesn’t say why. I have Yahoo’s Image Blocking section of the spam protection set on “always open images except in spam folders. ” I have the Vista firewall turned off because when it’s on I don’t get any attachments just little boxes with red X’s in them. Please let me know what’s going on. I am so sick of Vista protecting me from myself I am about to kick the darn computer out the window. This is a good start in theory but not always a great deal for consumers. Some ISPs give away basic virus protection software but upon closer examination it’s merely a trial version that constantly nags users to purchase upgrades. Other ISPs charge additional monthly fees for special editions of brand-name anti-virus protection. To get firewall spyware and spam protection you have to pay even more. Usually when you do the math you’ll save money – and have a more robust product – if you buy it outright yourself. The people targeted by these limited ISP solutions are those unable – or just plain unwilling – to invest the time to find a better deal of which there are plenty if you know what to look for. There are many anti-virus software publishers who earn their main revenue from corporate users then offer a free consumer-level version.
