Make a resolution to battle digital demons

This is a good start in theory but not always a great deal for consumers. Some ISPs give away basic virus protection software but upon closer examination it’s merely a trial version that constantly nags users to purchase upgrades. Other ISPs charge additional monthly fees for special editions of brand-name anti-virus protection. To get firewall spyware and spam protection you have to pay even more. Usually when you do the math you’ll save money – and have a more robust product – if you buy it outright yourself. The people targeted by these limited ISP solutions are those unable – or just plain unwilling – to invest the time to find a better deal of which there are plenty if you know what to look for. There are many anti-virus software publishers who earn their main revenue from corporate users then offer a free consumer-level version.

The firewall automatically approves apps that require Internet access so no prior ‘app scanning’ is required; the previous version required too much user intervention. Like the spam filter it also appears to be collaborative – unknown apps that you vouch for are reported to BullGuard. The other major improvement is a new spam filter which claims to offer ‘comprehensive phishing protection’ as well as better performance. Again the old version was less than perfect and the new version is much better. It’s collaborative so when you identify an email as spam all other BullGuard users spam filters are sent the information. Like BullGuard’s anti-virus and anti-spyware the spam filter integrates with Outlook Outlook Express and.
Two Weeks Out Spam Volumes Still Way Down
Washington Post United States
Adam O’Donnell director of emerging technologies at Cloudmark an e-mail security company in San Francisco said those who did not see a drop in spam from the McColo shutdown likely subscribe to an Internet service provider that already does an effective job blocking 99 percent of junk e-mail. “People who had really good systems in place probably didn’t benefit from this while those who had more marginal spam filter protection likely saw a significant drop off in spam” O’Donnell said. False positives for Windows Genuine Advantage left users unable to download updates from the software giant last year. Two years ago a renewals affected Symantec shops. But both these pale in comparison to the effects of Tuesday’s SonicWALL SNAFU which left some users suddenly stranded without protection. The issue was brought to our attention by Reg Rip who reports that the licensing server woes left some firewall users exposed for up to 12 hours on Tuesday.
