Adam O’Donnell, director of emerging technologies at Cloudmark, an e-mail security company in San Francisco, said those who did not see a drop in spam from the McColo shutdown likely subscribe to an Internet service provider that already does an effective job blocking 99 percent of junk e-mail. “People who had really good systems in place probably didn’t benefit from this, while those who had more marginal spam filter protection likely saw a significant drop off in spam,” O’Donnell said. Unlike rival software security suites, Agnitum is slightly more constrained: it doesn’t for example give you the benefit of a backup system or system maintenance. Agnitum Outpost Pro Security Suite 2009 continues to score well in large AV group tests, and still earns a current Virus Bulletin VB100 badge. Its spam protection, however, is a mixed bag #8212; it was overwhelmed by a collection of 6000+ spam messages. Rather than processing them as they arrived, Agnitum Outpost Pro Security Suite 2009 initially accepted all the e-mail into the Windows Mail inbox and then scanned them afterwards, which took a long time to complete. Its accuracy was average #8212; it correctly spotted 96 per cent of the spam but of the remaining 4 percent ‘non-spam’, over half of it was still junk. Training definitely helps here.

They have an arsenal of tactics that makes it very difficult to capture and prosecute them, much less collect substantial court awards. Many spammers operate from countries in the Caribbean and Central America, where it’s tougher to seize assets and easier to hide them, Dozier said. Yet spammers don’t have to operate outside of U. borders to garner protection, he noted. Many simply move to states such as Florida, Texas and Nevada, all of which have laws that make it difficult to prosecute them. “Many commercial e-mailers are located in Florida because it has laws that protect judgment debtors in the form of homestead exemptions,” Dozier said.

The product supports a whole host of tools to help you fight the SPAM that plagues everyone using email today. AtMAIL supports DNSBL, pattern matching technology, message redirection, full blacklist and white list; both domain and user, Group and user filtering is also available. The web interface even allows users to define their own level of anti-spam protection. The system even supports Bayesian filtering, all built into the install. For those administrators that have to support the smart devices and mobile users; this worked out of the box for us. With this module the mail synch is working on all of our devices without any issues. The access your mail anywhere from the phone or mail device was very easy to get up and running.
