The innovative Network Box approach will offer customers significant
improvements over any existing spam detection technology by not just
analyzing the content and IP addresses, but also learning from user
email behavior and relationships to better understand which emails are
welcome and which are unsolicited spam. Currently, spam protection has been applied using three main methods:
message content analysis; sender’s reputation;
and challenge response, where email senders need to prove to the
recipient who they are. Anti-spam systems today rarely reach more than
95-98 percent accuracy, which — considering
the huge volume of email sent — still lets
through a significant amount of spam, says Stella. The new Network Box technology is based on the relationship management
concept but greatly improves on it by considering not only the sender,
recipient and IP address relationship — as
does the traditional technology. Instead, it analyzes and learns from
the behavior of both the sender and the recipient, and it
constantly learns from users’ behaviors. “Spam is an ever-changing target and not
well-defined,” adds Stella.

If you use a wireless device in your home, however, follow the instructions in the user manual to set up security, or you’re giving hackers and freeloaders an open door to enter your world. Turn on your spam filters. Most email programs include a spam filter that you can customize to your liking. Stopping spam before it reaches your inbox is another way to protect your computer from attacks. Antispam programs are available in case you want additional protection. I discuss this topic further in the next section.

Click the Options link in the upper right. Click Spam Protection to verify that Yahoo is filtering messages, and click Turn SpamGuard ON if it isn?t already enabled. Other Web mail services, such as Gmail, always leave spam filtering active at the server. If you receive e-mail through a Web host (your address looks like your_name@your_domain. com), visit the host?s control panel or setup area. The specific steps may vary; contact your tech support if you need help.
