Servcorp introduces a new standard of proof for spam
InfoWorld – Mar 27, 2008
“We needed a system that could grow with the company regardless of size or number of geographies covered,” he said adding that his preference was for an appliance-based solution with little maintenance. A number of competing solutions were evaluated before Servcorp selected Proofpoint’s secure messaging system. It provides protection against image-based spam, zero-hour virus threats and filters are updated automatically. This is in addition to anti-phishing features to prevent identity theft and an integrated e-mail firewall. Olsen said when the new solution was installed in audit mode next to the previous system, it found 71 per cent of e-mails received by Servcorp were spam. The old solution only identified 10 per cent of the total e-mail volume as spam with 86 per cent of spam getting through. “Our e-mail volumes have dropped dramatically and false positives are no longer a problem,” he added.

Smartphones: Pocketable Endpoints or Network Backdoor?
Enterprise IT Planet – Mar 27, 2008
Once the program is downloaded and run, the malware is launched. This, in case you haven’t already noticed, is very similar to what happens in the desktop world. An additional factor is ever-present, never-dying spam. It is easier to fill a cell phone mailbox with spam than it is a modern computer. And yet, we have no filters for this. I personally experienced a mini-flood done by my personal cell phone provider when their email server began sending out things in triplicate. It can be frustrating since there is no header info, no filter options for MMS and no mouse to easily select a bunch and just delete.

As a result, organizations can advance their objectives using the Internet as a business platform, while managing risks to their essential information, systems and employees. The new Websense ThreatSeeker Network, which features an “Internet HoneyGrid” melds both honeypots and advanced grid computing systems to parse through more than one billion pieces of content daily, searching for security threats. The new system uses more than 50 million real-time data collecting systems worldwide to monitor and to classify Web, messaging and data content, giving Websense unparalleled visibility into the state of content on the Internet. With this Internet intelligence, Websense security products can adapt to the changing Internet at speeds not possible by traditional security solutions from Symantec Corp. , McAfee and TrendMicro, and basic Web filtering solutions offered by Secure Computing, BlueCoat and others. Websense of San Diego, California is a global vendor of integrated Web, messaging and data protection technologies, that provides Essential Information Protection for more than 42 million employees at more than 50,000 organizations worldwide. Distributed through its global network of channel partners, Websense software and hosted security solutions help organizations block malicious code, prevent the loss of confidential information and enforce Internet use and security policies… The ThreatSeeker Network provides Internet intelligence to Websense Web, messaging and data security products, which then provides protection to customers. The new ThreatSeeker Network includes more than 100 Websense Security Labs researchers
worldwide lead by security industry luminaries, leverages content classification and data identification with binary, lexical and statistical analysis along with heuristics, image recognition, machine learning, pattern detection, natural language processing and data fingerprinting, leverages data-mining Honeyclients that mine and analyze more than 100 million Web sites daily, and uses more than 50 million real-time data collecting systems parsing through one billion pieces of content daily. The new ThreatSeeker Network scans more than 100 million e-mails and 50 million Web sites daily to classify content “in the cloud” through Websense Hosted Security data collection services, scans nearly 10 million emails for unwanted content and malicious code every hour, uses Honeypots and Spamtraps that capture spam, phishing or exploit campaigns accounting for more than 10 million unsolicited e-mail and Web-based attacks daily, and assigns more than 2 million domains, networks, IPs (Internet Protocol) and hosts with reputations every hour. “Websense was the first to classify the Internet and protect customers from Web-based threats and the first to combine Web intelligence with user and data knowledge to protect customers’ information from data loss,” said John McCormack, senior vice president of product development, Websense. “Today’s attacks are increasingly focused on stealing an organization’s critical information. The ThreatSeeker Network demonstrates Websense’s commitment to investing in products, state-of-the art technology and security research to uncover adaptive threats that pose risks to an organization’s business. Many security vendors and faux filtering vendors without real security expertise are talking about Web 2.
